I’m Ian Bright, a Grass Valley–based mushroom hunter and educator. I’ve studied wild mushrooms through years of field experience, book study, and ongoing learning with experienced mycologists. My approach is education-first and safety-centered, focusing on careful observation, responsible identification, and respect for ecosystems. I guide outings, school talks, and classes designed to help people learn confidently.

The following certifications are in progress and will be completed by Mar. 22, 2026.

A Safety-First Approach

Landing-Page-Choice-Squares.jpg

Mushroom learning is approached with care, patience, and respect—for people, ecosystems, and the land. Identification is taught thoughtfully, without shortcuts, assumptions, or pressure.

All outings and classes emphasize observation first and ethical foraging practices. The goal is long-term learning and confidence built through knowledge.

Participants are encouraged to learn at a pace that prioritizes safety and understanding.

Testimonials

Landing-Page-Choice-Squares.jpg

"Ian Bright has led mushroom forays for our students and staff several times over the past 4 years, and each experience has been outstanding.
He is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient, with a natural ability to engage both children and adults.
Ian leads mushroom walks as adventures of discovery, making participants feel like they are on a shared treasure hunt rather than in a lecture.
His approach fosters curiosity, connection, and a genuine love of the natural world.

Before You Go

My son made a fun, educational game with me running around an 8-bit forest collecting mushrooms and calling out their names.

It’s short, quirky, and made with a lot of love!
